FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is The Arts Council?

The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County is the oldest arts council in the country.  Established in 1949, the Council raises funds through an annual arts campaign that are then distributed to arts organizations, educators and individual artists through a variety of competitive grant programs.

Why should I support The Arts Council?

Your gift to the arts provides support for the entire arts community—including arts organizations, educators bringing hands-on experiences to the classroom, and
individual artists establishing their careers in Forsyth County.  Volunteers help the Arts Council award grants each year, making sure that a variety of arts experiences for our entire community is supported.  The arts are essential to the economic vitality of our community.  The local arts industry produces $136 million in economic impact and supports 4,769 full time jobs, making the arts one of Forsyth County’s top 10 employers.

Is The Arts Council supported by the United Way?

The Arts Council is NOT a United Way agency.  The United Way and The Arts Council conduct campaigns which are similar in format—raising money in united fundraising
appeals that is then re-granted throughout the community.  The United Way supports primarily human service organizations.  The Arts Council supports our arts community.

What is the Renaissance Society? How can I become a member?

The Renaissance Society is a giving category established to recognize and honor philanthropic leadership.  Members of the Renaissance Society are donors who contribute $1,000 (including matching gifts) or more to the annual Arts Council campaign.

What is the Arts Nouveau Society?

Art Nouveau is a group started by the Arts Council to address the challenge of engaging young people with the arts in Winston Salem – as champions, leaders, patrons, and participants. We have a board of twelve young leaders from the community currently working on a social media contest that will hopefully draw attention to some of the best creative talent in Winston from visual to performing to culinary arts. The contest will be punctuated throughout the year with events that feature these artists and provide an opportunity for young art enthusiasts to come together as a community.  For more information, please contact Devon MacKAY at 336.747.1417 or dmackay@intothearts.org

Thousands of residents in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County—just like you—support the arts campaign.  Contributions from local businesses and their employees account for a large percentage of the entire amount donated to The Arts Council each year.  City, County, and State governments also support the annual arts campaign.  The Arts Council is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization and donations are tax deductible.
